About

A landscape that holds meaning for so many, generations of club users, local iwi, Gizzy locals, surfers; the list is long, so it was important to get the landscape surrounding this historical upgrade right. The clients wished for their club to be a place where all would feel welcome, the landscape would need to accommodate clubbies, board riders, locals, café diners and those at night visiting the restaurant space located on the second floor whilst providing a design outcome that was cohesive and in harmony with the amazing surrounding landscape. A layout was developed that provided sheltered space for diners in the new kiosk and allowed views to Young Nicks Head whilst in this space, the first land sighted by the crew of Captain Cooks Ship Endeavour. The existing access road and car parking layout was reversed to ensure user safety and pedestrian connectively and spaces made more desirable with additional turf, hardstand areas and lighting. The planting would mimic that seen in the surrounding dunescapes and be extremely hardy with large tree installations. Restoration works were undertaken in the dunes located to the front of the club with locally sourced Spinifex, Wiwi and Pingao installed hopefully encouraging further restoration along the shoreline.
